ARTIST STATEMENT

People ask many artists, why they do the work they do? I say that I do my art for fun and to achieve an inner sense of peace. While art can be stressful when it comes to the thought process behind it, or figuring out you want to execute your idea, in the end the process of creating is all worth it. Working with a medium like clay has given me that inner sense of peace when creating any piece. Additionally, starting with a block of clay to functional addition into my life is so fulfilling. It gives me a sense of purpose knowing that this piece of clay can become a plate, bowl, cup, vase and so much more. In sum I do the work I do to fulfill an inner need to do something. If I can do something or create something with my hands I feel more complete.

Now when it comes to my thought process and decisions I make it's definitely a range. I don't particularly stick to an overall theme that I am trying to execute for the school year. Mainly when a project is presented to me I analyze in my head how I would want to use it, or where it would be seen. Like if I am making a vase I might choose a simple design so it can go well with a room layout. Or if I am making some type of tableware I may add more design so that it sticks out compared to my other tableware pieces in my home. However, I do notice that I shift toward themes of nature and plants or earthier vibes whenever I am creating different ideas for different projects. Moreover I usually use the baseline materials needed for a clay piece. Those materials include clay either being studio clay, terracotta, or porcelain, and glaze that correlates with the clay type. I also usually hand build my pieces and don't use the potter wheel or add any outside materials. I just like my pieces to shine by themselves without additional decorations.

In regards to my current work I seem to have a sort of flow to it. I notice that I gravitate towards more greens and simple designs that still look amazing. This can be seen in my works such as my cream and sugar holders, 3-D printed vase, and “Tree Lady”. All these pieces are very simple but at the same time still are able to impress me with how they look. I also feel my work has grown from what I have done in the past. My current flow and theme that has begun is very different from what I have done in the past, but I enjoy it. My pieces in the past feel more immature, while my pieces now feel like the true core of my art journey. This new flow has come from I have chosen to live my life when talking about aesthetics. I enjoy simple things that are not over complicated or over stimulating. I want my pieces to feel serene and feel simple while staying engaging. In the future I want to attempt a theme throughout my pieces. While I want them to look/appear possibly bland or boring, I want there to be a secret underside to the piece. Maybe an easter egg to a different project, a hidden element like a door and so much more. In short I want my art to grow with me and fulfill me till the end of my days.
